JOB DESCRIPTION
GIS Technician
Objective 1: To help create and manage GIS databases for comprehensive plans for clients located in rural areas throughout Texas, mostly in compliance with Texas Community Development Block Grant regulations
1. Assist in the development of GIS databases for city and colonia comprehensive plans. Ensure complete and accurate data entry and post processing of field survey data; create metadata; ensure all mapping meets the standards and criteria set forth by the state.
2. Create basemaps for clients, including digitizing and/or georectifying lot, block and subdivision shapes.
3. Retrieve and interpret a variety of mapped information such as USGS quadrangles, FEMA flood plains, soil classifications, utility system layout, appraisal district land divisions, subdivision and town plats, aerial photographs.
4. Conduct field surveys from time to time onsite in client cities with mobile GIS/GPS tablets. Survey may include inventories of housing conditions, land uses, drainage structures, and street conditions.
5. Products on demand for company staff related to housing, economic development and census data analysis for state housing, community development and other grant and low-income tax credit applications.
Objective 2: To help produce maps for products required in comprehensive plans.
1. Produce clear, accurate maps with consistent, standardized symbology;
2. Generate graphics needed for planners and clients;
3. Assist in the production of plan notebooks, including printing maps, operating company plotter, and folding maps for plan assembly and completion
Objective 3: To assist planners in the analysis of data from GIS databases in completing comprehensive plan elements
1. Export attribute data to Excel and/or Access to perform queries on information;
2. Produce charts that describe housing, population, utility and streets and drainage conditions
Objective 4: Work in a team environment to complete assigned projects
1. Effective communication with other team members (engineer, staff planners, interns) for the timely completion of projects.
2. Meet with city and/or county officials on occasion to procure plats, utility maps, and other mapping data to build GIS databases.

GrantWorks, the largest grant writing and management firm in Texas, is seeking a full-time GIS Technician to work as part of a team that develops comprehensive planning studies for clients throughout rural Texas.
The planning department, based in Austin, produces studies that include analysis of population, housing, land use, utility systems, streets and thoroughfares, zoning and subdivision ordinances, central business districts, parks and open space, and economic development.
Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in geography, with 1 year full-time work experience using ArcGIS 9 preferred. Knowledge and expertise of ArcGIS 9.3, GIS methodology, geographic, and cartographic principles, and comprehension of projections, datums and coordinate systems, is required. Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and be an efficient writer and thorough researcher.
GrantWorks offers a relaxed work environment in central Austin. Job requires some travel within Texas. Salary range $28,000 to $34,000 annually, depending on experience. Excellent benefits package. Send resume/references to jobs@grantworks.net.
