Job Description
Position Summary: The Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) services all students of New York City with transportation needs to and from school. The Geographic Information Systems Router/Planner will be charged with assisting the Director of Special Education Routing with school bus routing and with assisting the Manager of Operations Analysis with new initiatives involving geographic information systems and bus routing applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as administrative technical expert to executive staff on matters pertaining to management, business and field services components of OPT so that new initiatives associated with geographic information systems and bus routing are smooth and successful.
• Works as a school bus route assignment staff, designing and improving school bus routes for special education children.
• Performs specialized research and analysis related to functional planning related to automated and manual bus routes.
• Using GIS background troubleshoots to discover best practices and new procedures for routing students and development of a comprehensive work program for streamlining student transportation.
• Creates planning maps and analyzes spatial data using ArcG.
• Defines information needs and sources associated with student transportation. Maintains and updates an organized database on the local area transportation conditions and the need for policy studies to determine changes in transportation and population patterns.
 
Job Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory full-time experience in city or transportation planning; or
2. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to the above. Graduate education in geography, Geographic Information Systems, transportation planning, transportation engineering, public administration, operations analysis or related fields may be substituted for up to two years of experience, on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits from an accredited college for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree.


Preferred

• Familiarity with New York City GIS data sources.
• Proficiency in ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS 9.3).
• Familiarity with New York City street geography.
