Position Description:
The Central Forestry & Horticulture division manages citywide urban forestry initiatives including; street tree planting and landscape enhancement contracts, stewardship and training programs, the Asian Longhorn Beetle eradication effort and the creation of urban forest management plans for specific park properties through the New York Tree Trust program.
Under direct supervision, perform basic research and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis in the field of urban forestry and environmental management for the division of Central Forestry and Horticulture. Maintain, update and create data for several GIS projects. Document GIS project methods clearly and thoroughly. Create reports, maps, and other output from various data sources including; GIS data, tabular data, and processed remote sensing images. Collaborate with other staff in GIS unit on projects, troubleshooting, data generation and analysis. Provide maps and information to other Parks’ divisions and other agencies as required in a timely fashion. Assist in the collection, storage, maintenance and dissemination of data relevant to urban forestry studies. Support the implementation and use of the agency’s Forestry Management System (ForMS) and ensure the quality and integrity of urban forest inventory data. This includes training, technical support, and fulfilling map, analytical and/or reporting requests. Configure Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units for collecting field data. Train foresters and others to use GPS units. Organize and post-process GPS collected data. Assist in maintaining hardware and other technical equipment.

Requirements:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
2. An associate degree from an accredited college or completion of two (2) years of study (60 credits) at an accredited college and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience of the type listed under “Examples of Typical Tasks”; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have completed at least 60 college credits.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. At least 2 years of experience using GIS software with ESRI ArcGIS Products.
2. Ability to troubleshoot GIS problems including hardware and software.
3. Proficient in GPS technologies and ArcPad.
4. Understanding of database principles including enterprise database skills and experience managing large spatial datasets.
5. Experience with Windows based PCs and technologies.
