| | | Claire Watkins | | | | Educational Experience |
| Newcastle University, England | Newcastle, England | Degree: Geomatics - Geographic Information Science Major: GIS, Grade 2:2 Dates: September 2006 - June 2009 |
| | | | Professional Experience |
| GIS Technician | Foresty Commission | | September to Present | Braidwood, Carluke, ML85NE, Scotland, UK | Forestry Commission Scotland – GIS Technician
My role as a GIS Technician within the Forestry Commission is extremely varied and requires an understanding of varied programmes. I must provide GIS support to other GIS users in my district (Scottish Lowland forest district) and report all GIS faults and bugs within ArcMap and Forester (an addition to ArcMap). I also create maps and digitise new data for foresters and rangers in our district. On occasions, I am required to work out of the office. This involves taking a handheld GPS receiver and mobile GIS unit with me to digitise and survey land in our district. Some of my other tasks may include digitising old maps by geo-referencing them into ArcMap, and creating 3D representation of the forest, to show how it looks at the present time, and how it will develop over a period of 45 years.
Among other things, I am responsible for updating the forest sub-compartment layer in my District. This is a real-time forecast of sub-compartments within the district which are felled and restocked throughout the year. These figures are sent to the Government annually.
I have attended some training courses whilst I have been with FCS, these have included:
- Browser Training for Forester 3.5
- Sub-compartment Database Training
- Design Planning
- Recreation Management Training
- Contract Mapper Training
- Diversity Training
- The Legal Agreements System for Leases | | GIS Student summer placement | Northumberland National Park Authority | | June 2008 - Sept 08 | Hexham, Northumberland, England, UK | GIS student summer placement
This position included digitising land and boundaries which were owned by the NNPA and had been newly repositioned by Ordnance Survey (OS). All of the digitising was done using the software package MapInfo. My other responsibilities included collecting photographs of signs around the National Park, which were obtained by using the company PDA, camera and car. Once the co-ordinates had been collected, these points were digitised to create a map which contained hyperlinks to every sign in the National Park in order to access them easily if ever they needed to be replaced or repaired.
I was responsible for my own time management, which allowed me to organise my day around the tasks I was to undertake. |
| | | | Other Information | I graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc Honours degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS) and I am currently working as a GIS Technician for the Forestry Commission in Scotland, UK.
I am an enthusiastic, confident individual who has good communication skills and is willing to learn. I adapt well to change, easily follow instructions and work well on my own accord, as well as being able to play an integral role in a team.
Whilst at University I completed a dissertation which was focused around geovisualisation, creating a 3D fly-through of the Northumberland National Park by using ESRI’s software package ArcScene.
I am looking for a career that will challenge my abilities and strengthen my current knowledge of GIS. I have the ability to adapt my knowledge into different sectors, for example, I have taken my knowledge of GIS and adapted it to my current job role which is mainly forestry, something about which I knew nothing when I got the job. I feel that my GIS skills are very versatile and I would like to apply and develop them within my future career.
