GIS Specialist Weyerhaeuser
October 2005 - present Natchitoches, LA
• Serve as final quality control for our ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase, covering 375,000 acres of Louisiana and Texas, insuring system integrity. Perform statistical analysis on incoming data, reconciliation within GIS, and troubleshooting any data issues that arise.
Participate in corporate-level meetings to determine the company’s use of ArcSDE and ArcGIS, including discussions on layers and attributes, data standardization and normalization, and methods to maintain long-term system integrity.
Run regular reports to locate any data consistency issues, which I then resolve through attribute correction, layer topology correction, and linked-layer map topology correction.
Perform all work within an ArcSDE/Oracle 9.2 geodatabase, which includes analysis, compression, versioning, creation of new feature classes, adding and changing database fields, and adding and updating attribute indexes.
Perform all direct edits to our ArcGIS system, which includes 22 distinct point, line, and polygon layers such as points of interest, roads and utilities, and operational ownership.
Personally utilize photogrammetry techniques, ortho-rectified aerial photos, acreage plats and drawings, surveys, and other third-party documents (such as shapefiles) to refine and enhance the ArcGIS 9.3 database.
Integrate data (in adherence to organizational standards for symbology, labeling, and layering) from LiDAR flights, shapefiles, rasters, GPS data, and additional data obtained through field work, into the ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase.
Personally perform on-site (field) inspections for data validation and verification purposes, which include data gathering, GPS tracking and locating devices, and other hands-on tools and methods.
Provide training and Level 1 technical support for ArcGIS Desktop within my organization, as well as provide technical support of shapefiles and personal geodatabases for field workers and contractors.
Responsibilities have grown from an original 250,000 acres geodatabase to a 375,000 acres geodatabase, as new land was acquired and personnel and regions were reallocated.
Supply contractors and other employees with exported shapefiles, maps, and other data sets (such as personal geodatabases) to support operations. Provide real-time assistance using GPS location and other technologies, as needed. Weyerhaeuser contractors use GPS-integrated tractors and bulldozers, and these shapefiles defined the work area. This keeps operations compliant with EPA and SFI regulations, and avoids legal issues by keeping workers out of protected creeks, watersheds, and adjacent properties.
• Edit layers using spatial analysis functions for both daily operations and special projects while following accepted mapping protocols and symbology. Also create reports to monitor the state of our inventory and for budgeting purposes.
• Export reports from Weyerhaeuser’s LIMS and CAPS accounting software and processed those reports in MS Excel to reconcile acres that are invoiced/paid versus acres in the GIS database denoted by that activity.
• Use MS Excel daily to process reports using pivot tables and charts, analyze raw data (ex: as an intermediate step in reconciling data from Forestry Field System, a cruise-processing application), perform data manipulation from attribute dumps of system data, and create spreadsheets that were used as the primary data transfer format between co-workers.
• Drafted and implemented a verification process for our LiDAR flights of the North Louisiana region. I managed a team of 9 coworkers to rapidly identify a representative subset, collect data using field measurements and GPS technologies, and analyze that data to ascertain the accuracy of the LiDAR flights.
• Identified requirements and documented collection specifications for timber assessment and inventory purposes. As part of this, I created and refined a “contractor accuracy verification process” to track adherence to our specifications. To speed adoption from all parties, I trained the contractors directly in what was required of their field survey efforts.
